Michigan City man electrocuted on Cass County construction site

HOWARD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — Authorities say an Indiana man has been electrocuted on a construction site in southwestern Michigan.

Cass County sheriff’s officials say 53-year-old Steven Smith of Michigan City died Friday after being electrocuted while working on overhead power lines. Investigators say it was an accident.

Police said Smith was working at an American Electric Power substation that’s under construction in Howard Township.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office released the following information about the incident:

Sheriff Richard J Behnke reports his office is investigating an accidental electrocution on 05-31-2019 at approx. 1135 hrs. 
The incident occurred in the 2700 blk of White St, in Howard Twp, Cass County, Michigan.
Emergency personnel were called to an AEP substation that is under construction in that area. 
On arrival, it was found that Steven E Smith, 53, of Michigan City, Indiana was electrocuted while working on the overhead power lines. 
First aid was immediately administered to Smith.  Smith succumbed to his injuries from the incident.
Deputies were assisted on scene by Pokagan Tribal Police, SMCAS Ambulance Service and Howard Twp Fire Department.
This incident remains under investigation at this time.
