A 27-year-old man was arrested after a police chase ended outside of Memorial Hospital in South Bend.

The pursuit began on in Elkhart County on the Toll Road.

Indiana State Police say a trooper found a black Volvo sitting at a gas pump with both doors open and two men who appeared to be sleeping.

The trooper woke the men to check on and identify them.

According to the trooper, the driver, Trevor Niedart, of Davenport Iowa, was uncooperative, refused to get out of the Volvo and then took off when more police showed up.

The chase ended when Niedart crashed into some metal posts at the hospital.

Police found suspected meth on him while booking him into jail on a slew of charges.

Indiana State Police released the following information about the arrest:

Troopers with the Indiana State Police Toll Road Post were sent to check on the welfare of two males that appeared to be sleeping in a parked car that was blocking a gas pump at the service plaza located at mile marker 90 westbound on the Indiana Toll Road. This is approximately two miles west of the Elkhart Exit.

Trooper Doyle arrived around 2:50 a.m. and saw a black Volvo passenger car that was sitting at a gas pump with both doors open and two males that appeared to be sleeping. Doyle woke both males to check on their wellbeing and to identify them. The driver, later identified as Trevor Niedert, 27 of Davenport, IA, purportedly was uncooperative, while Doyle attempted to determine his identity, and refused to get out of the Volvo.

Niedert fled in the Volvo shortly after additional troopers and an Elkhart County Deputy arrived to assist. Niedert continued westbound on the Toll Road and exited at exit 83 for Mishawka before making a u-turn, and continuing westbound, eventually exiting at exit 77 for Notre Dame.

Niedert turned south on 933 and entered South Bend before eventually crashing the Volvo into metal posts at Memorial Hospital. Niedert got out of the Volvo and fled on foot before being caught by officers with the South Bend Police Department.

Troopers found several kinds of pills in the Volvo and determined that the Volvo was stolen out of Texas and had a false license plate.

Niedert was preliminarily arrested for Resisting Law Enforcement With a Vehicle, Level 6 Felony, Resisting Law Enforcement, Class A-Misdemeanor, Reckless Driving, Class A-Misdemeanor, Possession of a Legend Drug, Level 6 Felony, Possession of a Syringe, Level 6 Felony, Possession of Stolen Property, Level 6 Felony, and Possession of a Controlled Substance, Level 5 Felony.

Niedert was taken to the St. Joseph County Jail where it was discovered that he had suspected Methamphetamine hidden on his person.
