A 53-year-old man who was taken to the hospital after he was shot by a South Bend Police officer has died.

The shooting happened just before 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, June 16, near the Central High Apartments at William and Colfax in South Bend.

Officers were originally called to the scene for reports of a man going through vehicles, according to 95.3 MNC’s reporting partners at ABC 57.

The officer engaged the man, identified as Eric Jack Logan of South Bend, who was partially in a vehicle in the Central High Apartments parking lot, according to the St. Joseph County Prosecutors Office.

Logan got out of the vehicle and approached the officer with a knife raised. The officer reportedly discharged his gun, hitting the man, the prosecutor’s office stated.

Logan was taken to the hospital in critical condition. He later died.

The officer was treated for minor injuries.

As this was an officer-involved shooting, the St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit was activated, per protocol, to handle the investigation. This remains an active and ongoing investigation.

South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieig’s office earlier released the following statement regarding the shooting:

“Early this morning near the Central High Apartments, a South Bend police officer responded to a call for service regarding a person breaking into vehicles. In the course of the incident response, the officer was involved in a shooting. The Mayor is aware of the situation and receiving updates from law enforcement. As with all officer-involved shootings, the Metro Homicide Unit is conducting an investigation. During that process, any related updates will come from Metro Homicide. Our thoughts are with all those affected by this incident and their families.”

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
