South Bend man, 21, arrested after hit-and-run crash in Dowagiac

A 21-year-old South Bend man was arrested after a hit-and-run crsh in Dowagiac.

The collision happened around 9:40 a.m. on Friday, June 21 on E. Division Street near W. Railroad Street.

The vehicle that was struck rolled on its side, trapping the occupants inside.

Witnesses told police that the suspect vehicle was travelling south on W. Railroad St. and ran the stop sign at the intersection of E. Division St. The suspect vehicle struck the second vehicle in the passenger side rear door which caused it to roll. The suspect then took off at a high rate of speed with witnesses trying to follow it.

Dowagiac and Wayne Township Firefighters extricated the occupants of the vehicle. The vehicle was driven by a 65-year-old woman from Alabama. A 76-year-old Niles man and a 65-year-old Dowagiac woman were riding in the vehicle. They were taken to Ascension/Borgess Lee Memorial Hospital for treatment of minor, then released.

Thanks to tips from witnesses, officers located the suspect and vehicle at a home in the 400 block of Michigan Ave. in Dowagiac.

Upon contacting the driver, officers learned that his license is currently suspended and that he had been drinking all morning.

The driver was arrested on preliminary charges of operating while intoxicated, leaving the scene of a personal injury crash, and driving while license suspended.
