Clean up at Drewery’s site stalled due to asbestos

Clean-up work has stalled at the former Drewry’s Brewery property on Elwood Avenue in South Bend.

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management has discovered asbestos at the site, which was torn down in 2017. Work has ceased while they try to determine how much of the surrounding residential neighborhood may have been contaminated.

The city agreed earlier this month to give the former owner of the property another opportunity to clean up the site. The asbestos was discovered during an inspection late last month. The city had originally sought to hire a firm to demolish the remaining buildings at the site.

I guess the site belongs to the City of South Bend or the State of Indiana now. President Buttigieg can put his new White House on top of the debris pile and be closer to his favorite constituents after his inauguration. 😉
