Police recovered a stolen car early Sunday morning…and found a man asleep in the driver’s seat.

South Bend Police say Joel Sorensen was asleep in the luxury car when they were called to a business on North Portage Avenue around 1 AM Sunday morning.

He told the officers that he got drunk and drove to the parking lot to sober up after fighting with his girlfriend.

A check of the vehicle information learned that the license plate was in his name, but the vehicle, a 2018 Infiniti, had been reported stolen from the Hertz rental agency.

Sorensen said he bought the vehicle for $3,000 after first claiming he’d rented it from a friend, though he declined to name the friend. A handgun was also found in the car.
