New details in July senior housing complex standoff

We’re learning more about the suspect at the center of a standoff with police at a senior housing complex last month in Mishawaka.

68 year-old James Geerts was arrested on July 18 after a standoff at the facility on Lincolnway East.

Court documents say that he had previously been seen “patrolling” the area of a local high school with a firearm. A welfare check was performed when neighbors became concerned about erratic behavior, which led to him pointing a gun at police at his door and threatening to shoot them if they didn’t lower their own guns.

He entered a not-guilty plea on intimidation and weapons charges on Wednesday and is due back in court on August 13.
