South Bend man sentenced on weapons charge

A South Bend man has been sentenced to 46 months in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Joshua Banks, 32, was supposed to be serving a sentence at a community corrections facility in South Bend, but instead stole a pick up and drove it until it ran out of gas.

Police saw Banks walking along a street with a backpack and a gas can. They say officers tried to approach him, but Banks fled.

Banks was eventually caught and arrested. After retracing his route, police located the backpack and gas can as well as a stolen handgun.

Banks has five felony convictions, at least four of which involved violence or threats of violence, and eleven misdemeanor convictions.

He also had four pending state criminal cases when he was sentenced.
