South Shore Train considers speeding up the Chicago-South Bend route

The South Shore is moving forward with plans that would shorten the trip from South Bend to Chicago to just 90 minutes.

That would shave an hour off the current commute time for the roughly 200 people who ride the train between the two cities every day.

The St. Joseph County Redevelopment Commission has approved funding for the Double Track Project, with a pair of unanimous votes at Tuesday’s meeting.

The price tag for the project is expected to weigh in at around $300 million, which would be split between the state and the four counties along the route.

The funding still has to go to the County Council for a vote on September 10 for approval. Construction would begin in 2021.
