Michigan City PD Chief, Two Assistants Resign

Some controversy from inside the Michigan City Police department, as its three highest ranking officers suddenly resigned from their jobs. All of this in the wake of an ongoing spat with Mayor Ron Meer.

The resignations came from Chief of Police Mark Swistek, and both his assistant chiefs. A couple weeks ago the Mayor’s stepson was arrested on drug and weapons charges and Mayor Meer accused the prosecutor and drug task force officers of targeting his stepson as a form of retaliation.

In a resignation letter the chief says Meer directed him to reassign officers and withdraw cooperation with the LaPorte County Drug task force–which Swistek said he was “simply unable to reconcile” with his oath of office.
