Berrien County home invasion turns deadly Wednesday night

One man is dead after a home invasion turned into an exchange of gunfire Wednesday night in Berrien County.

Benton Township police were called to Briarwood Apartments, located in the 1900 block of Union Avenue, around 11:30 p.m. on reports of a “home invasion and shots fired.”

According to ABC 57 News, residents told police that two masked gunmen forced their way into their apartment and told them to “get down.” One of the residents was in a bedroom at the time and he armed himself with a rifle, then exchanged gunfire with a suspect armed with a handgun.

The suspects fled the apartment, while continuing to fire toward the unit.

Officers found one of the suspects lying on the pavement outside of the apartment building. He was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity will be released at a later time.

Meantime, police are still searching for the other suspect involved in the incident.
