St. Joe County looking to hire medical staff for jail

(Tommie Lee/95.3 MNC)

At a meeting Tuesday night, the St. Joseph County Common Council voted to add medical staff to the county jail.

There are vacant spots in at the jail for medical professionals, and by a 6-1 margin the council agreed to work to fill them.

Medical services had been provided to inmates by Beacon Health System, who have decided not to renew their contract for next year, according to WNDU. The county said that move came as a surprise, and their efforts to reach out to five other health providers were unsuccessful.

Hiring their own staff is expected to come with a price tag of about $1.5 million.
