Michigan lawmakers are working to secure funding to help protect the state’s western shore in the wake of massive erosion issues.

Congressman Fred Upton has sent a letter to the Army Corps of Engineers seeking another $2.4 million for next year’s budget to add 120,000 cubic yards of sand along the lake shore.

Another group of lawmakers has penned a letter to Governor Gretchen Whitmer urging her to declare a state of emergency. That would allow people with significant property damage to have access to state funds. Lake Michigan has had near-record high water levels and erosion affect homes, state parks, and even roads along the coast.
