Michigan House votes to ban device use for drivers under 18

The Michigan House has voted to make it illegal for drivers under the age of 18 to use a cellphone behind the wheel.

The prohibition would be for drivers except in cases of emergency. The legislation was approved in the State House on Wednesday.

The move to fight distracted driving was applauded by Governor Gretchen Whitmer, who supports a hands-free law that would further restrict the use of mobile devices while driving.

Whitmer urges the Republican-controlled Senate to pass the House Bill when it returns to session next month.
