South Bend Redevelopment Commission votes on homeless housing plan

Winter is almost here, and as usual its weather has made a few appearances in South Bend. As usual, the arrival of the cold weather finds a homeless population hoping for a warm place to sleep.

At Thursday night’s meeting of the South Bend Redevelopment Commission, a measure was approved that would help fund The Gemini Project. It’s a plan that would set aside units for homeless housing.

In March of 2018 the commission gave $1 million to The Gateway Project, money the city would like reallocated to Phase 2 of The Gemini Project. It would set aside six apartment units owned by the South Bend Heritage Foundation between West Washington and West Colfax. That money would be earmarked for upkeep and improvements on the building.

$500,000 would be set aside for a permanent supportive housing project at a site yet to be selected.
