UPDATE: Missing kayaker found dead in St. Joseph River in Niles identified

A kayaker gone missing was pulled from the St. Joseph River in Niles and taken to the hospital.

First responders were called to the riverbank Wednesday morning, Jan. 1, after four men launched a kayak and then ran into trouble on the water.

One paddled to safety and called for help, according to 95.3 MNC’s reporting partners at ABC 57.

A second male was able to get out of the water. A third man was rescued.

All three were said to be in stable condition, ABC 57 reported.

The fourth man,  Jean Claude Mutabazi, 40, of South Bend, was found submerged in the water near the dam where the group launched the kayak. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The other men range in age from 37 to 81.
