New sentence handed down in 1993 murder case

The man convicted of the 1993 murder of a Niles teenager was given a new sentence Thursday afternoon.

The judge gave Robert Leamon a minimum of 25 to 60 years in prison. He was given credit for the 24 years and 3 months he has already served following a conviction in 1997. At that time he received a sentence of mandatory life in prison without parole for the murder of 15 year-old Rebecca Stowe after learning she was pregnant and unwilling to abort the child.

He was 16 at the time, and became eligible for re-sentencing due to a US Supreme Court ruling that stated mandatory life sentences for juveniles are unconstitutional. A Cass County judge threw out Leamon’s sentence earlier this month. Leamon will be eligible for parole in less than a year.
