Elkhart Police update pursuit policy

(Photo supplied/Elkhart Truth)

More changes for the Elkhart Police pursuit policy. They suggested changes back in November but some of those did not meet needed standards. The department was involved in nearly 150 pursuits between 2016 and 2019, but a review of the department determined that more than 60 percent of those should never have happened.

While there are more technical nuances to some of the new policy the biggest difference is they will no longer engage in pursuits for traffic violations. Instead pursuits will only happen if its related to a suspected misdemeanor or felony.

These changes do reflect suggestions from an independent review of the entire department.
