After an inspection of the San Mar Kennels in South Bend, the decision has been made to allow them to remain open.

The kennels will, however, be on probation. The County Humane Society had previously revoked their kennel permit, which San Mar attempted to appeal.

The St. Joe County Animal Control Commission has voted to put San Mar on a two-year probationary period, during which they will be subjected to random checks by the county Humane Society.

Those who supported reinstatement said the kennel is clean and they would not trust anyone else to take care of their dogs.

Opponents said the conditions there were inhumane and that the improvements San Mar said it has made are not good enough.
