Michigan reports dip in virus cases but might be fewer tests

This undated electron microscope image made available by the U.S. National Institutes of Health in February 2020 shows the Novel Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. Also known as 2019-nCoV, the virus causes COVID-19. The sample was isolated from a patient in the U.S. (NIAID-RML)

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan public health official are reporting a big drop in the daily number of COVID-19 cases but are cautioning against drawing wider conclusions as fewer tests are conducted on weekends.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reported 645 new cases Sunday compared with 1,392 the day before.

Locally, Berrien County reported 104 cases with a fourth death. Cass County reported  11 cases.

Public health officials say Sunday tally included 95 deaths, compared with 111 deaths on Saturday.

Health officials say they can’t confirm if the dip “represents a true decline” of coronavirus cases. There’s limited data to compare, but the case count could reflect fewer tests administered on weekends.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced, on Saturday, that 13 new or expanded COVID-19 drive-through testing sites would begin operating around the state under a plan to increase the state’s daily testing by about 40 percent. In Benton Harbor, a drive-through testing site is set up at  InterCare Community Health Network located at 800 M-139. Call 855-869-6900 for information.
