Business off to a slow re-start in Indiana

The challenges of reopening the economy are becoming more apparent now that the process is beginning. Gerry Dick, with Inside Indiana Business, says that even though businesses want to get going again to preserve themselves, they understand the need to phase in.

“Generally it’s a positive reaction to this phased approach that was announced by the governor on Friday,” said Dick. “The Indiana Chamber of Commerce, the state’s largest business advocacy organization, came out with a statement in support of it.”

He said he believes every business, no matter the size or nature of the business, wants to get going again.

“Generally speaking the folks I have talked to, just in the past few days, are supportive of this phased approach to get back in,” he said. “The concern is obviously rushing back in too soon, get problems and then we’re back maybe in a worse case than before.”

Dick said that commercial real estate will face some challenges, too, as some businesses don’t make it and close. Other businesses may realize they didn’t need as much space.

“There are some who argue that businesses now have become more accustomed and maybe familiarized with remote working, won’t need as much space.”

He said there are also businesses that may believe in the need to for face to face contact to offset that.
