Many Hoosier businesses reopening with uncertainty

INDIANAPOLIS–Many businesses that are reopening are doing it with much uncertainty. But, they are beginning with basics, like deep cleaning, face masks, and social distancing, said Gerry Dick, with Inside Indiana Business.

“There’s no playbook for reopening the economy in this circumstance. So, they’re going on basically a daily basis. The basics like deep cleaning and physical distancing. All those face masks and all those types of things are gonna be part of the reopening.”

Dick said each business has its own set of uncertainties that they are taking as they come.

The impact of the pandemic on all areas of business cannot be overstated, said Dick, pointing out that hotel occupancy in Indianapolis is around four percent, much lower than it should be with conventions that would normally be happening over the summer.

“One hundred plus conventions and meetings have been canceled this year,” he said.

But, Dick said VisitIndy, the organization that oversees the convention industry in Indy, has begun talking to some people in other cities who are not happy with the way their conventions are being reorganized, who are interested in moving them to Indiana.

“So, actually a few conventions have expressed interest in coming here that weren’t before. But, that doesn’t mitigate this incredible impact on the Indiana economy.”
