One dead after crash involving moped in Elkhart Monday

A man has died after his moped collided with another vehicle in Elkhart Monday night.

The crash happened at the intersection of Montrose Park Drive and Spring Mill Drive just before 9:30 p.m.

Police report a Jeep Commander was traveling northbound on Montrose, turning west onto Spring Mill, when a Vespa moped pulled out in front of it.

The Jeep had the right of way, as there are no posted stop signs in the north and south directions of travel.

The vehicles collided and the driver of the moped was later pronounced dead at an area hospital.

He has been identified as Tad Rheinheimer, 66.

Police report Rheinhemier was wearing a helmet, and may have suffered a medical issue prior to the crash. Toxicology results are pending.

The driver of the Jeep was not injured.
