Man, 26, killed in three-vehicle crash on US 31/US 20 bypass in South Bend

A 26-year-old man was killed in a three-vehicle crash that happened on the U.S. 31/U.S. 20 bypass at the bridge over Lincoln Way in St. Joseph County.

The collision happened around 11:50 a.m. on Tuesday, July 21.

The vehicles involved in the crash were traveling northbound. A truck/semitrailer was traveling in the right hand lane and changing lanes into the left lane when the crash occurred.

The left front of the semi collided with the right rear of an F-150 pickup truck, causing it to spin into the right lane, where it hit a Mazda Miata.

After the impact, the Miata and the F-150 ended up in the lower elevation area between the northbound lanes and the on ramp, where the F-150 hit a tree.

A LaPorte man driving the pick-up was taken to the hospital for treatment.

His front seat passenger, Brandon Perez, 26, died at the scene. A 3-year-old passenger in the back seat was also hospitalized.

A Mishawaka man driving the Miati was treated and released.

The Hartford, Michigan, man driving the semi was not hurt.

The St. Joseph County Fatal Crash Team is investigating factors into the crash.
