Local hospitals say they are getting themselves prepared in the event of a future surge in COVID-19 cases.

Other states have seen a surge in recent cases, and hospitals around Michiana are monitoring the situation. St. Joseph Health System CEO Chad Towner told ABC 57 that he’s “cautiously optimistic” with how the situation has been handled there so far, and that any surge would be handled as a team effort in the region.

Indiana, has seen just under 66 thousand coronavirus cases, nowhere near the numbers seen in hot spots like Texas and Florida.

COVID and non-COVID units have been set up at area hospitals.
