Fifth execution carried out in Indiana since July

For the second time in three days, the federal government carried out an execution in Indiana.

Keith Nelson was executed via lethal injection at the U.S. Penitentiary in Terre Haute for the 1999 kidnapping, rape and murder of a 10 year old girl in Kansas City, Kansas.

Nelson’s legal team tried to stop the execution, arguing the federal government needed a prescription for the drugs used in the execution process. That ruling from the U.S. District Court Judge Tanya Chutkan was thrown out by the appeals court on Thursday night.

Nelson showed no remorse in his final minutes and made no final statement.

Nelson will be the fifth person executed by the federal government since July and only the eighth since 2001.
