(Tommie Lee/95.3 MNC)

People who live in South Bend will be able to travel to Chicago in a quicker amount of time.

The South Bend Tribune reports a new project that would add a second set of train tracks just received $50 million in funding from the government, which could help the project begin as early as Summer 2021.

The new tracks would be placed between Michigan City and Gary, reducing travel time by train by about 45 minutes.

Seems like a waste of $50 million to me. The South Shore sells around 300,000 tickets per year. This grant money comes out to a subsidy of $167 PER RIDER. Compare that to the sub-$20 ticket price, and it becomes apparent that this is not a sustainable endeavor on its own. Our Federal grant system is horribly wasteful.

These kind of numbers need to be part of the standard reporting so people can understand the issue.
