A warm, dry, sunny week ahead in Michiana

The workweek is off to a cool start, but don’t let that get you down this Monday morning! Expect sunny skies, mostly dry weather, and daytime highs in the 70s this week.

As you step out the door, temperatures are starting in the upper 30s to low 40s this morning. Make sure to grab your coat. You could see a little frost on your windshield or lawn this morning. By lunchtime, temperatures are still cool in the low 50s. This afternoon we’ll reach a high around 62. It will be a little breezy this afternoon, but there is plenty of sunshine to enjoy. Overnight skies are mostly clear with temperatures falling into the mid 40s.

Tuesday and Wednesday are sunny with daytime highs in the 70s. Wednesday will get breezy with wind gusts up to 25 miles per hour in the afternoon. Thursday is slightly cooler with a high in the mid 60s. Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday temperatures will rebound back into the 70s. The weekend looks to be dry and sunny.

“There really doesn’t appear to be rain in the near future,” says Crystal Petit, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. “A lot of the state is experiencing conditions of drought. Things are abnormally dry to low on drought conditions.”

Petit says having temperatures in the mid-to-high 70s this time of year is not something that typically happens.

Once we get into those upper 70s, we’ll be looking at temperatures around 10 degrees above normal for what you would expect this time of year,” says Petit.

When it gets dry like this, conditions can be prime for a fire if the winds are blowing hard enough and people aren’t taking the proper precautions.

“Make sure you’re not burning things on days where it’s windier, where things are more likely to get out of control. Keep an eye on local burn bans near you,” says Petit.

The latest numbers from the U.S. Drought Monitor show more than half of Indiana being “abnormally dry.” That means there can be short-term dryness that slows the planting and growth of crops. There can also be some lingering water deficits.
