South Bend Arbor Day Celebration set for Saturday at Leeper Park West

South Bend Venues Parks & Arts (SBVPA) is hosting an Arbor Day Celebration this Saturday.

The event, set to begin at 9 a.m. at Leeper Park West, was rescheduled from April due to the pandemic.

The day will begin with a tree giveaway from SBVPA’s Forestry Division. The first 70 people will receive a native Indiana tree to take home.

The National Arbor Day Proclamation will also be read, which celebrates the City of South Bend becoming a Tree City USA community for 24 years.

Tree City USA has four core standards the Forestry Division must meet to qualify, including:

  1. Maintain a tree board or department
  2. Have a community tree ordinance
  3. Spend at least $2 per capita on urban forestry
  4. Celebrate Arbor Day

SBVPA says the nationwide movement provides the framework for a healthy, sustainable urban forestry program in South Bend.
