Northwest Indiana man facing 11 charges after allegedly dragging officers

A man is facing eleven felony charges for dragging two sheriff’s officers with his SUV and running over one of them.

Earlier this week, Ernest L. Hoover Jr., of Chicago, woke up a Dyer couple by repeatedly ringing their doorbell. The couple called police, so Hoover left. Later, however, he returned to ring their doorbell.

The couple called police again, and Lake County sheriff’s officer Alex Gallegos arrived and began talking with Hoover. During the discussion, Gallegos realized Hoover had an active warrant in Lake County, and tried to arrest him. However, Hoover ran.

Sheriff’s Officer Michael Maggi arrived and tried to help Gallegos arrest Hoover. However, Hoover was able to get back in the SUB and accelerated in reverse, dragging both officers for several feet until they fell off.

As Gallegos was dragged, one of his legs hit the concrete, and the SUV’s tire ran over his right foot. Meanwhile, Maggi was hit in the left leg. A witness told police Hoover appeared to be lining up the SUV to run over the officers again when Maggi drew his gun.

Hoover drove away and was later found behind a business at 93rd Avenue and U.S. 41, where he was trying to change a flat tire on the SUV.

Maggi has injuries to the knee and leg. Gallegos was injured on his shoulder, knee and head. Both officers were placed on medical leave.

Hoover faces eleven felony charges, including battery, resisting law enforcement and attempted residential entry.
