A man died after he was shot and then tried to drive himself to the hospital.

Around 11:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 4, Indiana State Troopers spotted a vehicle traveling erratically at a high rate of speed in the 800 block of Michigan Street in South Bend.

The troopers performed a traffic stop. When the vehicle came to a stop, the driver, identified as Juwan Marquise Hamilton, 28, fell out of the car, having suffered apparent gunshot wounds.

The troopers and another driver attempted live-saving measures, including CPR, as an ambulance was called.

Hamilton was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Hamilton’s vehicle had not been put into park when he fell out and it began to slowly roll northbound on Michigan St. One of the troopers ran on foot after the car to stop it. He was able to get the vehicle stopped about 200 yards north of the spot where Hamilton was lying on the ground.

It was determined that Hamilton had been shot at a different location and was most likely driving himself to the hospital.

Investigators with the St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit are trying to determine where the shooting took place. Anybody with information is asked to contact Metro Homicide are 574-235-5009 or Michiana Crime Stoppers at 1-574 288-STOP.
