More residents of Elkhart County have died in 2020 than in any of the previous five years.

That’s according to data from the Elkhart County Health Department. The Elkhart Truth reports that 1,992 residents had died in the county through December 14.

The average number of deaths per year between 2015 and 2019 was 1,883, peaking with 1,887 in 2016.

County Health Officer Dr. Lydia Mertz said 14 point 3 percent of the deaths in the county were related to the coronavirus.
