Michigan woman steals police car, crashes it early Monday

A Sturgis woman has been arrested after she allegedly stole a police car Monday morning.

Just after 3 a.m., police were called to Lutz Road, near Hoshel Road, on reports of a one-car crash.

ABC 57 News reports the driver, a 25-year-old Sturgis woman, was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. While deputies searched the vehicle, the driver slipped free from her handcuffs and stole the patrol vehicle.

Police pursued the vehicle south on Lutz Road, where the suspect drove through the U.S. 12 intersection and struck a utility pole and multiple trees.

She then got out of the vehicle and ran on foot a short distance before being arrested again.

The suspect was booked in the St. Joseph County Jail on the following charges:

  • Suspicion of Operating While Intoxicated
  • Driving with a Suspended License
  • Operating Without Insurance
  • Motor Vehicle Theft
  • Fleeing and Eluding
  • Resisting and Obstructing
  • False Identification
  • Leaving the Scene of a Property Damage Accident
