A 21-year-old Benton Harbor man is in a medically-induced coma after a crash in Berrien County.

The collision happened around 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 11, on M-139 near Diller Road.

On arrival, officers found the driver trapped in the vehicle. He was extracted using the “Jaws Of Life” then rushed to Spectrum Lakeland Hospital for surgery.

Investigators learned from witnesses that the vehicle he was driving was traveling at a high rate of speed and failed to negotiate a curve near Diller Road and ran off the roadway, over corrected and crossed the centerline striking a dirt embankment causing the vehicle to flip, trapping the driver inside.

The crash remains under investigation and alcohol does not appear to be a factor in this crash.
