South Bend, Elkhart warming centers available for those in need

With very cold temperatures settled into the area for the next week, some communities are opening warming centers for people who cannot escape the extreme temperatures.

The Faith Mission in Elkhart is one such place that is open and ready to accommodate. In South Bend, there are several locations available during normal hours for residents who need to warm up. Locations and hours below:

– Charles Black Community Center – 3419 W. Washington Street
Hours: Monday – Thursday: 9am – 8pm, Friday: 9am – 3pm

– Howard Park Event Center – 219 S. St. Louis Blvd.
Hours: Monday – Friday: 8am – 8pm, Saturday & Sunday: Noon – 8pm

– Martin Luther King Jr Community Center – 1522 Linden Ave
Hours: Monday – Thursday: 9 am – 9 pm, Friday: 9am – 6:30pm

– O’Brien Fitness Center – 312 E. Walter St.,
Hours: Monday – Friday: 8am – 9pm, Saturday: 8am – 4pm, Sunday: 9am – 2pm

Residents who need overnight accommodations can seek shelter at Weather Amnesty, from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. nightly, at 506 S Main St. Because of severe weather, Weather Amnesty will temporarily extend its operating hours during the weekend of Feb. 6 and Feb. 7.
