The man who was killed in a head-on crash in St. Joseph County last month had drugs in his system, and was at almost twice the legal limit for blood alcohol content.

The investigation into the crash found that Stephen Stopczynski’s BAC was .15 at the time of the crash.

He crossed the center line on Grant Road, injuring a 13 year-old passenger who was airlifted to Riley Children’s Hospital with a serious spine injury. Her mother and four other siblings were also hurt in the crash with Stopczynski.

The crash was his second of the day, having plowed his car into a snowbank earlier in the day, according to WNDU.
