Elkhart County issues new rental, utility assistance program

Elkhart County has rolled out a new program designed to help with rent and utility payments.

The program is specifically meant for families who have experienced COVID-related financial hardship in their homes.

Households eligible for assistance must meet the following criteria:

  • Qualifies for unemployment or has experienced a reduction in household income, incurred significant costs or experienced a financial hardship due to COVID-19.
  • Demonstrates a risk of experiencing homelessness or housing instability.
  • Has a household income at or below 80% of the area median.

The program, designed to provide financial assistance for 12 months, can also cover past due bills from up to six months prior.
