It’s the only emergency vet for hours around the South Bend area. The Animal Emergency Clinic, or AEC, on Grape Road is Michiana’s only after-hours emergency vet, and very soon will stop offering those services.
According to the clinic, one of its vets recently worked 55 hours over the period of just three days to meet the demand of emergency services. WNDU reports that nationwide there is a shortage of veterinarians, especially those out of vet school, that are willing to work late night schedules.

The next closest emergency vet to Michiana would be in either Fort Wayne or Kalamazoo.

Like a toothache, a medical emergency with a pet happens nine times out of ten on a weekend or a holiday.
