Two people were killed in a house fire in Dowagiac Thursday morning.

It happened around 7 a.m. on East Telegraph Street.

WSBT reports that a young couple had moved into the house less than a year ago and were cleaning it out after the death of an older family member. The age of the structure affected the ability of crews to fight the fire.

Deputy Fire Chief Robert Smith said it was the first fatal house fire in Dowagiac in several years.
