The Elkhart Community Schools will be hosting a series of town halls to discuss an upcoming referendum.

The schools are urging voters to approve the referendum on May 4th, which would provide more than 120 million dollars to the district over the next eight years.

The Elkhart Truth reports that Superintendent Steve Thalheimer will answer questions during the town halls.

The referendum town halls are scheduled for:

6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 30, at Bristol Elementary School, 705 Indiana St., Bristol

6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 29, at Elkhart High School West, 2608 California Road, Elkhart.

Stronger Elkhart PAC will also stream each town hall live from its Facebook page at www.facebook.com/StrongerElkhart.

Additionally, the Greater Elkhart Chamber of Commerce Education/Career Development Council, Legislative Affairs Council and Economic Development Council will host a virtual meeting to discuss the referendum.

The meeting will be Tuesday, March 30 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“The schools are urging voters to approve the referendum on May 4th, which would provide more than 120 million dollars to the district over the next eight years.”

FALSE. The referendum doesn’t provide that $15,000,000 per year, the TAXPAYERS do!

This just perpetuates the cycle where the schools waste their budget on frivolous garbage, and then come begging for more money to pay for the things that are no longer funded because of the waste. Just say NO, Elkhart!

It’s like that sibling who drinks/smokes/gambles their paycheck away, and then borrows money to pay the rent and keep the lights on… The only way to fix it is to stop enabling it!

The school system and the referendum supporters are indicating the cost to the average homeowner will only be approximately $130 per year. This is extremely misleading, as it assumes an average home value of $100,000. The cost increases greatly as the value of the home increases.
As many middle aged people, I have saved and have increased my home value over the past 30 years. This referendum would impact my demographic greatly. I strongly oppose the referendum. Vote no!! A better plan from the school system is needed!
