Braun says Gov. Holcomb must go further to get Hoosiers back to work

A handful of states have decided to cut off expanded unemployment benefits that were being offered the height of the pandemic altogether.

Alabama, Iowa, Mississippi, Arkansas, Montana, and South Carolina have all cut off their expanded benefits and returned their unemployment programs to pre-pandemic operations.

Indiana still is offering expanded benefits, but Gov. Eric Holcomb said this week that in order to keep receiving those expanded benefits you must prove that you have been looking for a job. Senator Mike Braun of Indiana hopes Holcomb will take things a step further soon.

“I’m calling on all governors to make sure that they do the same things these states have led with,” Braun said. “Even more so than just requiring that you’re looking for a job.”

Braun told Fox Business that the expanded benefits need to be tossed in order to get the economy fully moving again.

Thousands of businesses are struggling to find workers for jobs they need filled as soon as possible as they get closure to being fully open again. Braun said there are many on Capitol Hill chalking the lack of workers up to lingering fears over the pandemic.

Braun doesn’t discredit that, but he said it’s more likely that people are not looking for jobs because they are actually taking in more income in expanded unemployment benefits than they would by having a job.

“That [the benefits] in places like Indiana with low costs of living was putting it out there at close to a thousand bucks a week,” Braun told Newsmax. “No rational individual would choose to go back to work when jobs are paying 600 to 700 a week.”

To solve this problem, Braun again reiterates that expanded unemployment benefits both from the states and the federal government need to be ended. If they are ended, Braun said that will incentivize more people to look for a job.

The expanded benefits are a way for the left to do “Fight for 15” without being able to pass the minimum wage hike. They are forcing businesses to pay more to compete with unemployment.

Here comes the inflation…
