Crews battle fire at former Elkhart restaurant

(ABC 57)

Elkhart and Osolo firefighters battled a blaze at a former restaurant location Wednesday afternoon that injured two people.

The 2-alarm fire broke out around 2 p.m. in the vacant building on Cassopolis Street, formerly the home of Gubi’s Chicago Bar & Grill.

A firefighter and a homeless person inside the building at the time of the fire were transported to the hospital. The firefighter suffered smoke inhalation and the squatter was treated for serious injuries.

The street, part of State Road 19, was shut down in the area for several hours while crews worked the scene, and power was knocked out to more than 1,200 customers when a transformer blew.

The restaurant had been vacant since 2012 and several people were seen leaving the building during the fire.
