I & M Power are planning to make big upgrades to the electric grid in St. Joseph County.

The company looks to invest about 23 million dollars into the power service in the southern Mishawaka area in 2022 and 2023.

These projects include installing new equipment at the Dragoon Substation, relocating about a mile of transmission line on East 12th St, and more.

A number of wooden utility poles will be replaced with steel, which cuts down on the need for maintenance.

The project will strengthen electrical service for the coming decades.
