Portage man in jail after allegedly threatening police, driving under the influence

A man is in jail for threatening police and driving under the influence, all while pretending to be an angel.

James Matthew Dewitt faces charges of intimidation, OWI while endangering a person, OWI while endangering a person with a prior conviction, OWI, resisting law enforcement and disorderly conduct, reports the Times of Northwest Indiana.

Earlier this week, Portage police were called to a report of loud music coming from a car at 2900 Bryant Street. The driver — later identified as Dewitt — was also drinking alcohol.

Eventually, Dewitt exited his car and began to walk towards his nearby house. When an officer told him to stop, Dewitt refused. The officer then grabbed Dewitt’s arm, but he pulled away. After a bit of struggle, several officers were able to handcuff Dewitt.

Police say Dewitt had an active arrest warrant through Pulaski County. When an officer asked if Dewitt had been drinking alcohol, he said he had a few drinks.

Once Dewitt was booked at the Portage Police Department, his behavior took a turn for the worse. He repeatedly yelled that he was an angel, and that the officers didn’t want to see the “seven levels of woe” he could inflict on them.

According to police, Dewitt repeatedly said he was going to “bring wrath” down upon the officers, and that he would also “eat their bones.”

Dewitt was later taken to the hospital for a blood draw, where he continued to struggle and growl in a low voice. He is now in the Porter County Jail.
