A 23-year-old woman from Illinois was killed after she collided with a pickup truck while operating an ATV.

The crash happened around 3:50 p.m. on Saturday, July 3, on Hipps Hollow Road, west of Evans Road in Sodus Township.

Upon arrival, Berrien County Sheriff’s deputies found the victim lying unresponsive in the front yard of a home.

The woman was pronounced deceased on scene.

Investigators were able to determine that the ATV driven by the victim was struck by a westbound Ford pickup truck.

The investigation showed that the driver of the ATV was leaving a home, traveling on a long 2 track dirt driveway with friends riding other ATV’s and dirt bikes, and had to cross Hipps Hollow Road to ride some trails.

The victim was trailing a short distance behind the others and was trying to catch up and did not yield for oncoming traffic before crossing the road and pulled into the path of the Ford truck, the sheriff’s department stated.

The driver of the truck, a 16-year-old boy from Buchanan, was not injured in the collision.  The victim was not wearing a helmet, the sheriff’s department stated.

Alcohol and speed do not appear to be factors in this collision.
