New deadline set to get Real ID

Sample ID from the Michigan Secretary of State's office

Still need to get your Real ID? You’ve got plenty of time.

Because of COVID-19, the Department of Homeland Security has moved the deadline from Oct. 1 of this year to May 3, 2023. From then on, you’ll need to show a Real ID card to fly within the US.

Real IDs aren’t mandatory.

You can still renew your driver’s license without getting the special designation — just don’t expect to be let on a domestic flight after the deadline.
