ZZ Top Bassist Dusty Hill dies at 72

(Tommie Lee/953MNC)

Dusty Hill, who for more than 50 years has been the bassist, keyboardist, and background vocalist for southeast Texas blues rockers ZZ Top, has died in Houston, according to multiple sources on Wednesday. He was 72.

The news comes just days after the band appeared without him at the Elkhart County 4H Fair. Filling in was the band’s long-time guitar tech, Elwood Francis.

Surviving bandmates Billy Gibbons and Frank Beard said “their compadre” passed away in his sleep at his home, adding “you will be missed greatly, amigo.”

The band’s current tour has dates scheduled through December of 2021. They had enjoyed the rare status among rock bands of keeping the original lineup together for more than five decades.

No cause of death has been released.
