The weather calls for triple-digit heat indices this week and severe weather possible, according to the National Weather Service.

“Tuesday through Thursday, we’ll see temperatures near 90, with heat indices possibly over 100. It will likely be the worst across the western portions of the state, but generally everywhere is going to be close to that 100-degree heat index at times,” said Andrew White, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Indianapolis.

The heat index is an index that combines air temperature and relative humidity, in shaded areas, to come up with a human-perceived temperature as to how hot it would feel if the humidity were some other value in the shade.

“We’re kind of expecting some of the worst storms to be possible late Tuesday night into Wednesday where there could be a fairly strong line of storms moving through with best chances across the northern and northwestern portions of the state,” said White.

White believes the primary threats are damaging winds and heavy rain that could lead to isolated areas of flooding.

“We’re not too concerned about hail or tornadoes with these storms over the next couple of days. We’re expecting showers and storm chances pretty much every day this week, but nothing really of note for severe weather during that time (after Tuesday), but a lot of that is kind of hard to predict this far out,” said White.

Much of the state will be under a “slight risk” of severe weather Tuesday. A slight risk implies that well-organized severe thunderstorms are expected but in relatively small numbers/coverage, or there is a small chance of a more significant severe event.
