The Western Rubber site in Goshen could turn into an apartment complex.

The City is planning on starting negotiations with a developer who hopes to turn the former factory site into a large housing complex.

The Elkhart Truth reports that the 170,000 square-foot property east of the railroad and north of Plymouth Avenue has undergone an extensive demolition and environmental remediation process. Now, it is a buildable site.

Redevelopment Project Manager Becky Hutsell told the Goshen Redevelopment Commission the results of the negotiation would be brought back to the commission for a vote next month.

We own a house directly across from this property and was told the ground was so contaminated from big underground tanks that other than a parking lot, it couldn’t be used. What changed?

Why in god’s name would you put a four-story apartment building on the property! Worst ever idea.
