Fire crews in South Bend were called to a single-story church fire in the 200 block of Johnson Street on Monday, Aug. 30.

The call came in around 9:55 p.m. about a fire at the New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church.

A South Bend Fire station nearby reportedly saw smoke before the initial call came in and went to evaluate the scene.

The crew said the fire started towards the back of the church, which caused them to use a defensive strategy.

It took the team nearly 40 minutes to put out.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated, though no injuries were reported.
